A Love Story Hidden in Scrabble Tiles

Every day we get closer to the release of The Luck We Carry: Love, Loss, and the Stories That Shape Us, and I keep thinking about why I wrote it in the first place.

Yes, I hope it helps someone navigating grief feel a little less alone.

But I also wanted the world to see a little bit of Ken’s sparkle.

Ken had this incredible sense of humor and a way of making things with his hands that turned ordinary moments into something memorable. One day he gave me a handmade piece that said “I still you.” It was his playful twist on the way we used to say “I love you” on the phone when I was sitting too close to coworkers to say it out loud.

It still makes me smile. And now it means even more.

Sharing pieces of Ken like this in the book feels like letting a little bit of his light keep traveling through the world.
