My Election Support Animal
In the aftermath of the 2024 election, where the orange felon won the presidency, thanks in part to members of my own family, I found myself in need of some serious emotional support that had nothing to do with them. The political climate had become more turbulent than ever, and my stress levels were skyrocketing. That’s when I decided it was time to speed up the timeline for bringing a new kind of support into my life: an election support animal. I’d planned on getting a dog in 2025, but that changed in late November 2024.
As the news outlets buzzed with post-election analyses and debates, I realized I needed a distraction that didn’t involve doom-scrolling through political commentary. Enter Hudson Heartbreaker, a Golden Retriever with floppy ears and a tail that wagged like it was powered by a perpetual motion machine. Hudson has an uncanny ability to sense when I need a break from the political chaos, often nudging me with his nose as if to say, “Hey, papa, let’s focus on something more fun—like fetch!”
Hudson quickly became my confidant and comedic relief. His antics, from chasing his tail to barking at his reflection, provided much-needed laughter during these trying times. Our multiple daily walks have become therapeutic sessions, offering a break from the relentless news cycle and a chance to breathe in the fresh air.
Hudson reminds me of the importance of living in the moment. While the world debated policies and scandals, Hudson focused on simpler pleasures: a good bone, a sunny spot by the window, and the joys of a belly rub. He reminds me that, despite the political turmoil, there are still moments of joy to be found in everyday life. It’s grounding like walking in lush grass barefoot.
In turbulent times, finding joy in simple things can be revolutionary. For me, adopting Hudson was the perfect antidote to political fatigue. He reminded me that while we can’t always control external events, we can choose how we respond—and sometimes, a wagging tail is all the support we need.
So, if you’re feeling overwhelmed by the state of the world and you have the ability and desire, consider adopting your own “election support animal.” When politics goes to the dogs, it’s only fair to let one help you navigate the madness.
